Doing Your Part to Keep Your HVAC System Running

A few months ago, my air conditioner completely died. I woke up in the middle of the night covered in sweat, and I didn't know what to do. The next day, I called an HVAC expert, and they came out to inspect my system. It turned out that it had failed because of filthy filters and a clogged return duct, which made me sick to my stomach. I had caused the problem, and I needed to learn how to fix things. My HVAC professional taught me a few easy maintenance techniques that I didn't know before, so that I could maintain my new system. Check out this blog to learn more about HVAC yourself.

What to Expect When You Have a Home Air Conditioner Tune-Up

Having your home's air conditioner tuned up by a professional is an important thing to do since it involves thoroughly testing and cleaning the unit to prepare it for upcoming use. If you have never had a tune-up done before, here is what you can expect during the process.

Evaluate Problems

One of the first things that an HVAC technician will do is ask you questions about how the air conditioner has been performing. For example, they'll want to know if it is cooling the house evenly or if some rooms feel hotter than others. The questions they ask will help them understand and look for potential problems with the air conditioner that need to be fixed.

Tune-Up The Air Handler

The technician may start the tune-up process with the indoor air handler. One thing that will be done is to measure the temperature of the air coming out of the supply line and coming back through the return air duct. This will let you know if the system is producing air at the right temperature. Internal parts, such as the blower motor, will also be checked for potential problems. The refrigerant lines inside the home will also be checked for potential leaks.

There are plenty of things that need to be cleaned as part of the air handler, which involves removing all the dust that has collected inside the unit. The condensate drain will also be cleaned out to ensure that there is nothing blocking water from leaving the system. Getting rid of dirt and debris will help produce cleaner air, as well as improve airflow in the unit

Tune-Up The Condenser

The condenser will also be thoroughly cleaned by opening up the unit and removing debris. Refrigerant levels will also be checked to ensure that you have the right amount of refrigerant inside it. Electrical lines will be inspected to ensure that the proper voltage is running to the condenser, and even individual parts will be tested to make sure that they are operating at peak performance. The inspection of the outdoor condenser will be much more thorough than the indoor air handler because there are simply more things that could be wrong with the condenser.

Think you're ready to have your home's air conditioner get a tune-up? Reach out to an HVAC technician in your area that can handle it for you. It will definitely give you peace of mind that your air conditioner will work this summer.
