Doing Your Part to Keep Your HVAC System Running

A few months ago, my air conditioner completely died. I woke up in the middle of the night covered in sweat, and I didn't know what to do. The next day, I called an HVAC expert, and they came out to inspect my system. It turned out that it had failed because of filthy filters and a clogged return duct, which made me sick to my stomach. I had caused the problem, and I needed to learn how to fix things. My HVAC professional taught me a few easy maintenance techniques that I didn't know before, so that I could maintain my new system. Check out this blog to learn more about HVAC yourself.

How To Make Home Cooling Efficient When Everyone Wants To Keep Their Doors Closed

Blog

Air conditioning best practices include keeping doors to rooms open in order to get the best possible air circulation. However, that means no one has privacy. If you're in your own place, that's not a concern. But in a house full of tenants, or even just a house full of teens trying to get some time out of their parents' gaze, an open bedroom door is akin to an enemy. People want their privacy, so those doors are going to be closed -- and you need to figure out how to keep your bills down since you won't have complete air circulation.

Install Ceiling Fans

Any bedroom or living/dining room that doesn't already have a ceiling fan should get one. Box and table fans aren't enough. New ceiling fans really affect how a room feels, and the breeze from the fan may actually let you keep the AC thermostat at a slightly higher temperature, which will cut down on your bills. After all, if you have a house full of people who stay in their rooms, you may not need the fan-free hallway to be as cool. On hot days, you'll still need the AC on, but maybe not as much as you would without the fans.

Grab That Microwave

People make fun of cookbooks dedicated to microwaves, but these small appliances have been around long enough for people to figure out some really ingenious recipes. And best of all, the microwave won't heat up your kitchen. With less heat coming from the stove or regular oven, your AC won't have to struggle against as much heat when the compressor turns on. Not only do you have lower bills from more efficient cooking, but you also have lower bills from not stressing out your AC as much.

Double-Check the Filters

If you have central AC, you should change the filters every month or so. But when you have the AC running constantly, check the filters a little more often. It's possible for the filters to clog up more quickly than every four weeks, and that can make your AC run less efficiently until you change the filter. You may find that you have to change the filters every two to three weeks in summer.

Don't forget to have the unit inspected yearly before hot weather sets in, and call a repair company like Baton Rouge Air Conditioning & Heating as soon as possible if the unit begins to work not as well as it has been.
