Doing Your Part to Keep Your HVAC System Running

A few months ago, my air conditioner completely died. I woke up in the middle of the night covered in sweat, and I didn't know what to do. The next day, I called an HVAC expert, and they came out to inspect my system. It turned out that it had failed because of filthy filters and a clogged return duct, which made me sick to my stomach. I had caused the problem, and I needed to learn how to fix things. My HVAC professional taught me a few easy maintenance techniques that I didn't know before, so that I could maintain my new system. 4 Tips For Winterizing Your Home

Blog

As fall approaches, you want to make sure that your home is ready for the cooler weather. You need to winterize your home so that you can reduce the amount of energy that your home loses throughout the day. You also need to take care of your HVAC system. Here are 4 tips for winterizing your home.

Clean the Outside Part of Your HVAC System

If you have an outside part of your HVAC system, now is the time to clean it up. Cut back any branches or trees that are crowding the outside part of your HVAC unit. You want air to be able to circulate freely around your air conditioner.

Next, you want to clean the outside unit. Make sure that your air conditioner is turned off, and then spray it down with a garden hose and attachment. This is a great way to clean off the coils on your HVAC system.

You may also want to make sure that your HVAC unit is protected from the elements. An open-air roof, located a couple feet above your HVAC unit, can help keep water and snow away from your unit, which should allow it to function more effectively.

Change Out the Air Filter

Next, make sure that you change out the air filter on your HVAC unit. After working hard all summer to keep your air clean, your HVAC unit needs a new, clean air filter. Remember to keep an eye on your air filter throughout the cold season to make sure that it stays clean. As dirt piles up, you may need to clean or replace your air filter at least once this heating season.

Insulate Your Air Ducts

If your air ducts are not insulated, consider adding insulation to your air ducts. This is an easy way to make sure that the air that goes through your air ducts makes it into your home at the desired temperature. Insulating your air ducts is a great way to reduce wasted energy and help get your energy bills under control.

Close Any Gaps

Finally, make sure that you close any gaps where air can seep into and out of your home. Caulk around all your windows and doors to prevent drafts. Be sure to caulk around pipes as well, where air can flow through the holes in the floor or walls. Also, take a look at your foundation, and caulk around it as well. The fewer places that drafts can creep in, the warmer your home will be overall.

If you find any issues with your HVAC system as you prep it for winter, be sure to contact an air conditioning repair specialist in your area to remedy those right away.
